Two global items to comment on. (1) China made one of the first successful transfers of power in the past year without force. This is an important historic signal that secular non-democratic governments can survive transitions without violence. (2) Koizumi’s re-election by his own LDP signals that the Japanese public is no longer fanatically peacenik.
